Tipping at hair salons is standard in the United States. Most stylists and colorists rely on gratuity as a significant part of their income, especially in high-cost cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Quick tip reference

Do you tip the salon owner?

Traditionally it was considered unnecessary to tip the owner since they set their own prices. Today this etiquette is largely outdated — tipping the owner is completely appropriate and appreciated.

Should you tip in cash or on the card?

Cash is always preferred by stylists because they receive it immediately without any processing fees. However, card tips are still appreciated if you don't have cash on hand.

Do I tip if I'm unhappy with my haircut?

This is a personal decision. If the stylist made a genuine effort and followed your instructions, a reduced tip (10–15%) is still fair. If there was a clear mistake, you can address the issue with the salon manager instead.

How much do you tip for a $300 hair color?

At 20%, that's $60. For complex coloring services, many clients tip 20–25% because of the time, skill, and product involved. A $300 service with a 25% tip would be $75.
